Frequently asked questions
Common questions about the Power BI Organizational Dashboard, its data refresh model, and how it integrates with your existing Power BI environment.
How often does data refresh?
Cognitive3D writes refined data to the shared storage container on a daily schedule. Your Power BI semantic model refreshes from that container on whatever schedule you configure in Power BI Service.
For deployments using the custom Power BI connector, refresh frequency is determined by your Power BI license — up to 8 times per day on Pro, 48 on Premium Per User and Premium.
What Power BI license do I need?
For the custom Power BI connector, any Power BI license works — Pro, Premium Per User, Premium, or Microsoft Fabric. Refresh frequency scales with the license tier.
For shared-storage delivery, you need a Microsoft Fabric workspace on F-SKU capacity or a Power BI Premium workspace. Pro and Premium Per User cannot read directly from Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 in the way the dashboard requires.
See Deployment options for what each pattern requires.
Where does my Cognitive3D data live?
In the custom connector pattern, data refreshes from the Cognitive3D REST API into the Power BI semantic model in your tenant. Cached data lives inside the Power BI service.
In the shared-storage pattern, refined datasets are written to an Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 container. The container can be hosted in either your Azure subscription or Cognitive3D's, depending on your data residency requirements. Discuss this during onboarding.
Can I add my own pages or measures to the dashboard?
Yes. The semantic model is exposed in your tenant, so you can build additional Power BI reports against it, add measures in Microsoft Fabric web modeling, or extend the existing report with new pages.
Once the report is in your tenant, customizations you make are yours. Cognitive3D continues to ship updates to the canonical report template, and you are responsible for ensuring your customizations continue to work when you apply those updates.
Can I combine Cognitive3D data with other data sources?
Yes. Once the data is in your Power BI workspace, you can join it with any other dataset you have access to, including learning management system records, participant data, operational metrics, or other Power BI datasets.
The Cognitive3D semantic model uses standard date and dimension keys (session_date_only, session_id, project_id, user_id, device_id) to make these joins straightforward.
What if a Cognitive3D SDK update adds new metrics?
New metrics introduced by SDK updates appear in the data pipeline within one daily refresh cycle. Cognitive3D updates the report template to surface them in subsequent releases.
Does the dashboard support multiple organizations?
Each deployment is scoped to one Cognitive3D organization, matching the scope of your organization API key. Customers managing multiple Cognitive3D organizations can deploy a separate dashboard instance per organization.
Who maintains the dashboard?
Cognitive3D maintains the canonical pipeline, semantic model, and report template, and ships updates as part of normal product development.
You maintain your own copy of the report inside your tenant. Standard Power BI tenant administration — credentials, gateway configuration, refresh failure alerts, capacity assignment — sits with your team.
How do I report a bug or request a metric?
Contact Cognitive3D through your account team or the Cognitive3D contact page. For active deployments, your account team is the fastest path.
